Hotel Mediterraneo fancies itself Sorrento’s original rooftop – and we’d have to agree. With a life that started as one woman’s private villa in the early 20th century, sometimes it’s hard to tell where the hotel ends and the cliffs of Sant’Agnello begin. She’d have been forgiven for keeping the Gulf of Naples view all to herself, but Antonietta Lauro opened the doors to the hotel in 1950, with a warmth and hospitality most five-star spots can only dream of. It’s equal parts indulgent retreat and welcome embrace – quiet, attentive hosting with a light touch that can’t be taught. This place just gets it.
Arrival sets the tone: a perch for weary travellers, a chilled glass of prosecco, and check-in that feels less like signing on the dotted line and more like the start of something special. From there, days move between rooftop and shoreline – a private lift drops you straight to the beach below, a boat waits if the mood turns to Capri, and come golden hour, Sorrento's original rooftop bar is exactly where you'll want to be. It's five-star, certainly, but the kind that invites you to let your hair down.

Sant’Agnello feels like the perfect small-town base for the boutique Hotel Mediterraneo. Sorrento and its splashy brand of five-star boltholes sit a 15-minute stroll away – close enough to smell the action but far enough away to feel like you’ve got your own private stretch of coast. Framed by citrus-scented leafy gardens and spying Mount Vesuvius across the water, this cliffside spot knows how to inject just the right amount of drama.
And while you might come for the view – it’s certainly a showstopper – you’ll stay for the other perks this spot has to offer. Sorrento a shuttle ride away (hotel’s, complimentary), day trips to Capri on the water, a jaunt to Pompeii easily arranged through the concierge. This is the Amalfi Coast at your fingertips.
The dining scene here is gloriously unhurried. Breakfast? In bed if you like – because it’s not just the cuisine that deserves to be zero-kilometre. If you’d rather take your morning coffee with a side of sea views, Vesuvio dishes up fresh pastries and seasonal dishes inspired by the surrounds. As the stars roll in the menu here gets a touch creative – a reworking of Campanian classics courtesy of Executive Chef Giuseppe Saccone. Expect tasting menus, regional wines, and waterfront tables that are sought after come sunset.
Vista Skybar & Dining is the picture of Sorrento rooftop glamour: sunset cocktails, sharing plates of Mediterranean fare, and some nights, a DJ set – because the night doesn’t end when the plates are cleared. For a quieter nightcap, Oltremare Lounge Bar is about digestivi, conversations too good to tear yourself away, and an atmosphere that convinces you to stay a little longer.
The descent into the spa feels rightly ceremonial – serious relaxation lies ahead. A rite of passage rather than a mere pamper session. The exposed stone walls of the tuff caves do a lot of the heavy-lifting vibe wise – it feels only right that we should leave our stresses at the door and reconnect with ourselves in this hallowed space.
But that’s not to say the treatments here aren’t a masterclass in 21st century luxury. Take the Le Pietre Ritual: a hot stone massage using stones drawn from the sea outside, finished with warmed herbal pouches tapped rhythmically across the body. Or, for couples, the Romance Ritual: a private wellness path – emotional shower, Turkish bath, sauna, Jacuzzi – before a shared massage and a glass of Campanian spumante rosé. If this is cave dwelling, we’re on board.
Unsurprisingly, this slice of the Sorrento coast knows a thing or two about living the good life. And perhaps best of all, here you’ll get complimentary access to the hotel’s swish beach club – just a quick zip down the cliff. And once you reach the shore, the Amalfi Coast is your oyster – two hotel-owned boats are available to hire for an afternoon on the water or a jaunt to Capri.
On land, the experiences lean foodie – and delicious. A Sorrentine pizza workshop, mozzarella-making, sommelier-led wine tastings in the Vesuvio cellar. For those who’ve had their fill – if they exist – a visit to the iconic Marinella tie ateliers or a heritage tour through the peninsula’s older corners. Whatever your version of a good afternoon, there’s a version of it here – already arranged.
