An escape fit for royalty
If you want to feel like royalty on your trip to the Italian lakes, look no further than Castello Dal Pozzo, where – you guessed it – you can stay in an actual castle. This boutique hotel started life as a Neo-Gothic castle, built by the Visconti family back in the 19th Century, and it’s as impressive now as it was then, hemmed by immaculate gardens and bubbling fountains. Nestled between the shimmering blue waters of Lake Maggiore and the rolling green hills of Northern Italy, it makes for a truly stunning stay.
As far as the interiors go, expect an old-meets new elegance – think grand halls with Murano-glass chandeliers, stained glass windows, coffered wood ceilings, and antique furniture. This property is also home to an 18th Century villa, and some expertly restored stables – the hotel’s rooms are split between the three buildings. Each room is unique and is accessorised with paintings from the family’s art collection. Expect antique-style furnishings and high ceilings, and in some cases, views over Lake Maggiore. If you prefer more contemporary styles, opt for one of the rooms in the renovated stables.
The hotel’s got three eateries. Le Fief Restaurant is the fanciest of the lot, and serves a menu of traditional Italian dishes, some of which have been served to the Dal Pozzo family over the years. , For something a little more low key, try the Dan Garden Lounge, where you can enjoy light bites and drinks in the arches below the castle terrace, with views over the castle park. Finally, there’s the Folia Life, which has a panoramic lake-view terrace, and serves a menu of drinks and international dishes. And for drinks, try the American Bar, located at the heart of the Palazzo.
There’s a breakfast buffet each morning, where you’ll have the choice of everything from fresh pastries and breads to cold meats and cheeses, as well as made to order eggs and pancakes. After you’ve eaten – and if you’re not heading out for the day – stretch out on one of the loungers by the outdoor swimming pool and chill out.

The waterfront promenade in Arona is smooth and wide, ideal for leisurely strolls. Watch the boats coming and going and spend a while just absorbing the gorgeous views. For a view from a higher vantage point, you could head to Parco della Rocca Borromea to admire historic castle ruins and panoramic views. Take a picnic and enjoy the grounds before returning to the town at dusk to enjoy homemade pasta in one of the trattorias.
