STAY ON THE SHORES OF LAKE MYVATN
Situated near the shores of Lake Mývatn, and surrounded by areas of distinct natural beauty, Hotel Laxa is an ideal location for those looking to explore Northern Iceland’s extreme yet beautiful landscape. Just don’t forget your hiking boots and camera if you choose to stay here.
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to hiking trails in Mývatn as the terrain is so distinct and varied. Start at the shores of the lake where icy blue waters are home to countless tiny islands, teeming with diverse plant life and birds of all different hues. Sweeping views of the lake can be seen from your hotel room window, too, giving you an idea just how perfectly situated you are to enjoy everything Northern Iceland has to offer.
Itching for further adventures? Take a 20-minute drive to Hverir – an area of high geothermal activity and one of the most unique places you’re ever likely to visit. Located at the foot of the Namafjall volcanic mountain, the vast swathes of orangey-red terrain are seemingly from another planet and host to some truly eye-popping natural wonders. Wander this barren landscape and you’ll witness boiling mud pots, hissing fumeroles, and natural vents belching out great plumes of sulphuric gas high into the sky. A surreal yet unforgettable experience, you won’t regret taking the time to explore this magical place.
Take an opportunity to dial up the relaxation with a visit to the Mývatn Nature Baths. Immerse yourself in the perfectly heated geothermic waters and take in the dramatic landscape that surrounds you. These waters are drawn from depths of up to 2500 metres and can reach temperatures of 40 °C. While here, take a few turns in the invigorating steam baths – a traditional Icelandic method of relaxation and a great way to relieve muscular aches and pains from a busy day’s hiking.
Mývatn’s dining scene may be small but makes up for it in quality. Ever tried Icelandic burgers or pizzas with a distinctly Nordic twist? You’ll find both at some of the unique restaurants located in the Mývatn region. For something closer to home, head to the hotel restaurant – Eldey – for a fusion of Scandinavian and classic European favourites to satisfy all kinds of palates. And with sweeping views of the lake to accompany your meal, why would you want to be anywhere else?
