You’ll find the Hotel Macedonia on a quiet street in Kalamaki, a resort town with a long, sandy beach that’s lapped by shallow turquoise waters. This beach is protected by the National Marine Park, as it’s the nesting spot for the caretta caretta sea turtle – look out for them popping their heads out of the Ionian Sea.
The hotel is well located – you can be rolling your towel out on the beach after a five-minute walk, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. If you fancy sampling Zante’s nightlife, Laganas is within easy reach. A five-minute cab ride will take you to the heart of the resort, where you’ll find a string of buzzing bars and clubs.
At the hotel itself, you’ve got a rectangular pool to dip into and there’s a separate shallow area for little ones. The pool’s surrounded by well-manicured gardens, and a roomy sun terrace that’s perfect for lounging on. There’s a poolside snack bar that serves up drinks and snacks throughout the day, too. And for restless kids, there’s a games room stocked with pool and air hockey tables.

The turtle nesting beaches sit just 150 metres from the charming Old Town, making it a good place to stop off after a day of snorkelling in the Mediterranean waters. This is traditional Greece at its best – authentic tavernas and cutesy souvenir shops, stuffed down spindly alleyways framed with blooms, and lined up along sleepy cobbled squares.
During the summer months it can get quite busy, but there are plenty of places to seek respite on holidays to Kalamaki. For a proper breather, head out into the countryside in a 4x4 or explore on two wheels.
