Action-packed resort with a waterpark

The lively Caretta Beach Resort is a top choice for families. There’s a great round-up of facilities, plus a round-the-clock entertainment programme which ticks off sports, games, karaoke and night-time shows. The hotel is also in a brilliant location – the nearest shops, bars and restaurants are just outside the main entrance, while the resort centre is around a 15-minute walk away. A golden, sandy beach is about 25 minutes on foot, but if you don’t fancy the legwork, hop on the hotel shuttle bus for a free ride.

The outdoor scene gets top marks, with two lake-like swimming pools snaking through the grounds, flanked by palm trees and loungers. There’s an onsite aquapark with slides, chutes and multi-racers, plus a miniature version with spraying fountains and tipping buckets that smaller children will love. The spa slows things down a notch, with a sauna, steam room, Turkish bath and treatment rooms.

    The aqua park here is a real winner thanks to its line up that caters from tots to teens (and big kids, too!) With a couple of pint-sized slides and sprinklers to suit wee ones, and impressive chutes and slides to keep the older kids happy, everyone is well-catered for here. There are plenty of nearby sun loungers to suit those who'd rather sit and watch, too. 

    Bus to the beach

    Named for the loggerhead turtles that call this stretch of shoreline home, Caretta Beach is a long belt of soft sand that's well worth a look, beach-lover or not. It's reachable in about 25 minutes on foot, but the hotel handily lays on a complimentary shuttle to whizz you back and forth – perfect if you've got little ones in tow.

    The seaside resort of Kalamaki faces an untouched, expansive cove, so it’s a magnet for beach lovers. If you’re lucky, you might catch sight of the Caretta sea turtle here, which is an endangered species known for living in the waters and coves around the island. 
    The turtle nesting beaches sit just 150 metres from the charming Old Town, making it a good place to stop off after a day of snorkelling in the Mediterranean waters. This is traditional Greece at its best – authentic tavernas and cutesy souvenir shops, stuffed down spindly alleyways framed with blooms, and lined up along sleepy cobbled squares. 

    During the summer months it can get quite busy, but there are plenty of places to seek respite on holidays to Kalamaki. For a proper breather, head out into the countryside in a 4x4 or explore on two wheels.
