If you want to be close to the heart of town but you like a bit of peace and quiet, the Splendour Hotel and Suites could be a splendid option for you. This boutique hotel can be found on the outskirts of Firostefani village, and comes with sweeping views over the sparkling Aegean Sea. There’s a walking trail that takes you straight to Fira from the hotel within a 10-minute wander – unless you’re tempted to stop at a coffee shop or restaurant on route. Or if you’re up for a hike, the trail leads all the way to Oia – the town you’ll have spotted on countless Santorini postcards.

The pool area is a great place to spend the day. It’s a split-level rectangular number that’s set into a roomy sun deck, which is scattered with loungers and canvas parasols. You’ll also find a shallow pool for little ones to splash in. The poolside bar offers freshly squeezed juices, expertly-shaken cocktails and light bites throughout the day. At mealtimes, you can head to the on-site restaurant, which serves up a range of international dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or, let your nose lead you to the local tavernas.

    More than any other resort on the island of Santorini, Firostefani pulls off the neat trick of being quiet, peaceful and reserved while also being captivating and fun – all just a short stroll from the vibrant bustling capital. Named for its position just next to, but a little higher up than, the capital of Fira, Firostefani (which translates literally as ‘Crown of Firo’) commands views over the island’s famous volcanic craters that are every bit as spectacular as those from its cosmopolitan neighbour, but with substantially less noise and far fewer crowds.
