Beachfront bliss on Rhodes’ east coast

Asterias Beach Resort has found itself a particularly peaceful pocket of Rhodes. Set directly on Afandou’s long sand-and-shingle beach, this five-star hotel puts the Aegean right outside, while Kolymbia is around 1km away and Afandou village around 3km. Fancy a day among medieval walls instead? Rhodes Town is roughly 18km away, with a bus stop conveniently positioned outside the hotel.

There’s plenty to keep you occupied between beach sessions. A spacious main pool and separate relaxation pool headline the outdoor set-up, while the spa adds an indoor pool, saunas and beauty treatments. Active types can make use of sports facilities, and families have a kids’ club and children’s facilities to call on. For an upgrade, Junior Suites with access to a shared pool are available.

Food comes courtesy of a brasserie-style buffet restaurant and à la carte dining, while the Enoteca offers a more intimate wine-focused experience. Poseidon Bar handles evening drinks, and there’s a Beach Living lounge and bar down by the shore. With the beach out front and Rhodes waiting beyond, you can make this holiday as lazy or adventurous as you fancy.

Find out more about Afandou

Afandou might be one of Rhodes’ biggest towns, just 5 kilometres from buzzing Falaraki, but it retains masses of Greek charm. The town’s name comes from the Greek word for ‘invisible’ – the town couldn’t be seen from the sea – which was a major benefit in the days of pirate raids. Today, Afandou holidays are anything but invisible – it’s a spot renowned for its pristine beach, cafés, churches and quaint town square, as well as its traditional carpet shops.
