Mykonos in the slow lane
If Agios Ioannis looks familiar, it’s because it has a claim to fame. This dreamy resort had a starring role in the hit movie, Shirley Valentine, and with its gleaming white buildings and pretty sandy beach, it’s no wonder it caught the eye of the location scouts. Holidays to Agios Ioannis are deliciously slow paced. Days centre on the beach. It’s only little – at 250 metres long – but it’s perfectly formed, with golden sand washed by impossibly clear blue waves. Behind the shore, there’s a clutch of tavernas – including Hippie Fish, which appeared in the movie. The menus specialise in local dishes and the freshest seafood going. Just 20 minutes’ drive away is cosmopolitan Mykonos Town. The island’s chic capital does nightlife very well. Start with a meal in one of its lantern-lit eateries, then hit the bars and nightclubs. It’s also great for shopping, with cutesy souvenir shops sitting alongside boutiques packed with designer names.
