Family-friendly seafront stay on a white-sand beach
Set on the edge of the Aegean Sea, Minos Imperial Luxury Beach Resort and Spa has a prime spot on the white sands of Volakias Beach, lapped by clear, turquoise waters. But this isn’t a place that rests on its top location—you’ve also got a choice of five swimming pools and waterslides to keep you busy.
When you’re not soaking up the sun on the beach or by the pools, there’s an air-conditioned gym, and you can get involved with activities such as aqua aerobics, and tennis. Children get their own lineup of events and games at the kids’ club, Joyland, and the entertainment team runs a programme of activities and shows during the day and into the evening.
The main restaurant, Mosaic Brasserie, serves a buffet of international food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there’s often show cooking to watch (and the chocolate fountain is always a hit). There are five à la carte eateries, serving everything from Greek and Italian cuisine to New York burgers and barbecued specialities – and they all have plenty of outdoor seating to make the most of the warm summer evenings.
During the day, you can pick up refreshments from the poolside bars or beach bar. Later in the day, sip cocktails at the lobby bar or the adults-only Chill Out bar – the perfect way to finish a day on paradise shores.
Just so you know, use of the sauna, hot tub, and hammam are an extra charge.

Find out more about Milatos
Pocket-sized Milatos is a place of two halves: the seafront area has a small port (which the fishing boats putter in and out of), a quiet shingle beach, and a handful of waterfront tavernas. The village lies a little inland, sitting prettily among olive groves. It’s home to more traditional tavernas, a bakery, and a Cretan coffee shop.
The village’s claim to fame is the Milatos Cave, a large cave with a fascinating history dating back to the Ottoman era. There’s even a tiny church inside! Just make sure your phone has a full battery, as you’ll need its torch to light your way.
Milatos is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area. You could hire a car and drive to nearby towns and villages, such as Agios Nikolaos, known for its traditional Greek charm and bustling marina and catch a boat over to the island of Spinalonga.
