Overlooking Mirabello Bay
On the north-eastern coast of Crete in Greece, Istron (which also goes by Istro) is a relaxing spot. It’s favoured for beautiful Golden Beach, a nickname given to Voulisma Beach after the colour of its sands, which is lapped by crystal-clear water.
You could come here to simply lounge on the beach and swim in the sea. But that wouldn’t seem fair to the nearby historical sites when there are several ancient ruins and archaeological sites in the area, including the Ancient City of Lato and the Byzantine Kremasta Monastery. If you’re more inclined to discover the Crete of here and now, grab a map to navigate the local hiking trails across rolling hills fragrant with herbs and past trickling streams.
For your evening plans, Istron has a line-up of places to eat and a few places to party. Settle down at one of the traditional Greek tavernas, then search out the handful of bars that offer a lively nightlife scene for those who want to dance into the early hours.
