Modern base in central Heraklion

If you want to pair lazy days in the sunshine with lots of exploring, the Galaxy Hotel Iraklio is a top choice. This contemporary high-rise hotel has a brilliant setting in the heart of Heraklion – sandwiched between ancient sites like Knossos and the bubbly nightlife and shopping scenes of the downtown neighbourhood.

Back at base there’s a good-size swimming pool to cool off in on warm days. It’s set in sleek wooden decking and comes with a smattering of palm trees, plus there’s a good supply of parasols and loungers for stretching out on. Head indoors and you’ll find a wellness centre for more in the way of relaxation. It’s decked out with a marble Turkish bath and a gym for holiday workouts.

As for dining, there are three restaurants taking care of mealtimes. Vetri Restaurant is a buffet affair, and lays on American-style breakfasts in the mornings, with things like pancakes, omelettes and fresh fruit all up for grabs. The Pool Deck is the place for light bites like salads and sandwiches, and the stylish Per Se Lounge has a Mediterranean menu and an impressive wine and cocktail list. Evenings here are low-key, and revolve around drinks-sipping under the stars, but every Friday the hotel welcomes a local musician.
