  • Tucked away on secluded peninsula overlooking Mirabello Bay
  • Feasts for a king with five distinctive Mediterranean dining experiences

Cretan calm, with Mirabello sparkle

St Nicolas Bay has mastered the art of making a resort feel like a secret. Scattered across a secluded peninsula between Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, its low-rise whitewashed buildings, stone pathways, and vivid bougainvillea tumble towards the brilliantly blue Mirabello Bay. The mood is polished but pleasingly unbuttoned, with Cretan warmth doing much of the heavy lifting.

The pace here seems to follow the water: breathe in, drift out, and let the sea keep the time. Swim from the secluded Blue Flag beach, retreat to a tucked-away terrace with a book, or choose a suite or villa with its own pool and you can practically teleport from bed to lazy laps. Five dining venues set the pace food-wise, from relaxed Mediterranean lunches to candlelit dinners beside the lagoon, while cocktails arrive at the water’s edge as the sun slips away.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Hotel highlights

Tumbling across a secluded peninsula on Crete’s quieter eastern coast, this hotel provides a blue-on-blue panorama that makes your morning coffee feel cinematic. Agios Nikolaos is just five-minutes away by car, putting its fishing harbour, boutiques, and café terraces within easy reach, while Elounda is around 15-minutes along the coast

Spinalonga’s Venetian fortress cannot be missed, the traditional village of Kritsa lies nearby, and the island’s ancient history unfolds at Malia and Knossos. Closer still, a seventh-century Byzantine church stands beside the hotel entrance, quietly reminding you that Crete has been doing this for centuries.

Dining moves easily between barefoot lunches and dressier evenings beneath the stars. Breakfast brings panoramic bay views, local specialities, and hot dishes prepared to order. Later, settle in for Mediterranean plates by the beach, perhaps a traditional Greek salad with feta, mini rusks, and fresh thyme, or a summer bowl layered with quinoa, lentils, avocado, grilled goat’s cheese, and pomegranate.

Evenings offer plenty of variety. Try fresh seafood from Mirabello Bay, Greek lamb giouvetsi with kritharaki pasta, or grilled sea bass with tartare sauce and herb-steamed vegetables. There are Asian-inspired dishes, fine local wines, and candlelit tables beside the lagoon pool. Finish with an inventive cocktail at the water’s edge, ideally when the sky is turning peach and the evening’s DJ has found their stride.

The spa takes its cues from the sea, pairing advanced skincare with aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, and treatments from Elemis and Cinq Mondes. Its indoor heated pool has hydrojet bubble seats, while steam baths, saunas, and secluded treatment spaces encourage a slower tempo.

For something memorable, book the seafront treatment cave for two, carved into the rocks with a seawater pool, hydrojets and bubble loungers. The Polynesian Sublime Ritual combines a private Jacuzzi, massage, and floral body ritual, followed by fruit and tea. Skin can be treated to an Elemis Pro-Glow facial or EOS-X LED light therapy, while energetic guests have a fully equipped gym, aqua fitness, personal training, and reformer Pilates. Complimentary morning flow yoga in the gardens is a lovely way to begin, particularly before breakfast.

Families are warmly welcomed, but not treated as a single species. The mini-club is mini only in name, and guaranteed to put big smiles on your tots’ faces. Teenagers get a rather more grown-up hideaway with gaming consoles, cinema screens, billiards, darts, and table tennis. Parents are welcome, but we’ll leave that one up to the teens.

The protected sandy cove gives little swimmers a gentle introduction to the Aegean, with a seawater paddling pool just beyond the beach. Behind the scenes, thoughtful touches make travelling with children feel refreshingly light: private pools can be fenced, baby food prepared to order, and everything from strollers to bath seats arranged in advance. Interconnecting rooms, family suites, and private-pool villas give everyone room to breathe, nap, or stage a highly competitive game of table tennis.

There is plenty to tempt you away from the sunbed, should the mood take you. Hire a bike and explore the coast at your own pace, join a guided hike through Crete’s rugged eastern landscape, or set out by boat for a closer look at Spinalonga and the hidden coves of Mirabello Bay.

Back at the resort, experiences take a more leisurely turn. Taste your way through the island’s vineyards with the hotel sommelier, learn the secrets of Cretan cooking alongside the executive chef, or arrange a private dinner in a secluded spot, complete with a menu and music chosen especially for you. Private excursions can also be tailored around the island’s villages, archaeological sites, and monasteries, so you can see more of Crete without surrendering the easy rhythm of the holiday.

The week-long wellness programme, which pairs private yoga and spa rituals with hiking, a Cretan cooking workshop, and a boat trip around Spinalonga.

Lingering over fresh Mirabello Bay seafood at the Greek Kafenion.

Browsing the hotel’s Argonaftis Art Gallery, where paintings, sculpture, and jewellery by Greek artists bring a welcome dash of culture to the sunshine.
