"My first trip to the wonderful island of Corfu was as a young man in 1970, on that holiday my pals and I did not have the luxury of staying in a hotel, due to limited funds it was camping for us.
49 years later when on a cruise I introduced my wife to Corfu town, which we both loved and rekindled memories for me, so the decision was made to return for a holiday there. We returned in September 2022.
We booked a hotel near to Corfu town which had good reviews on this very web-site, sadly, the reality was far from most of the Trip Advisers reviews. The pool was tiny and next to a main road, the hotel run down and the food terrible, it even gave me a gippy tummy during our stay - it was a disappointment to what we were led to expect. Even sadder still was that our stay was during the week when Queen Elizabeth II passed away. At least a good factor of being in that not very good hotel was that it was only a short walk away from Mon Repose Palace where Prince Phillip was born, it seemed fitting for us to visit there the day after our Monarch’s passing. It is now a museum and sadly there was not much there about Prince Phillip.
At least two good things was a really good bar opposite and the 2a bus service which took us into Corfu town and also Kanoni, which we fell in love with. It was there I noticed the wooded driveway the the Corfu Palace Hotel and made a note that when we return it would be to that particular hotel, which we did on the 21st September 2026 for a week’s stay. As the airport transfer drove up the drive through the hotel’s wooded driveway and we pulled up outside I could see this was a much superior hotel to that of our last visit. To say I was impressed when we walked into the spacious foyer and reception area to be speedily registered in by the efficient staff would be an understatement.
Our room, 333. Overlooked the front of the hotel and its gardens, it was a nice, clean and reasonably spacious room with a good bathroom with a walk-in shower. Little niggles with the room were a lack of storage space as there is only a wardrobe and just two drawers each side of the bed. To use the safe a key has to be requested from reception which for security has to be kept with you, whereas with coded safes you do not. The biggest gripe for my wife, which she experiences in many hotels, was the lack of a dressing table with a mirror, here there was just a long shelf which was quickly cluttered, although there was a large mirror. Despite the room having a two seater sofa there was no chair for her to sit on when doing her hair and make up, I had to bring in a chair from the balcony when she was getting ready.
However, the very many good things about this wonderful hotel outweigh those minor niggles. The hotel has a fantastic large saltwater pool as well as a funicular style lift which takes you to the hotel’s private beach. Both the pool and the the beach have cafe/bars and a lot of sun beds, although even though there are many of them they get taken very quickly. Pool towels are supplied by the hotel from 10am, which is the same time the two cafe’s open. When you check in you are given pool towel vouchers which, once you have managed to find the small office near the pool, you hand in to get your pool towels. We kept ours for the rest of the week and returned them on our last day.
Unlike our last stay at that previous not very good hotel, the food here in the buffet restaurant was really good, we enjoyed our breakfasts and evening meals and this time no gippy stomach!
The hotel also has in its gardens a child’s play area and bungalows with their own pool where some people stay. However, we had a couple of days of heavy rain during our holiday and as we raced into the hotel after returning from town we met a couple about to go out who, due to staying in one of the bungalows, had to get wet when going from the hotel foyer to their bungalow, we were glad we were in the hotel.
Kanoni is a nice place to be with wonderful iconic views, it also overlooks the airport runway so there is some noise from the planes, which did not bother us. There are three good bars there to visit too and we enjoyed sitting in the one especially which overlooked Mouse Island, not to forget the good old 2a bus service which runs every 20 minutes and gets you into Corfu town for 2 euros each and has a bus stop on the road right next to the entrance to the hotel driveway. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable week during our stay in this lovely hotel, it was a delight to be there and we hope to return. We can easily recommend it to others."
