"I’ve been staying at this hotel for several years and overall I still enjoy it, though it does feel like it has slipped slightly over time.
The location remains excellent, with a subway station right outside, the rooms are nice, and the beds are very comfortable.
There are, however, a few changes I’ve noticed. Previously, if you stayed more than two nights and chose not to have your room serviced, you could collect four complimentary items from the small ‘shop’ – things like a beer, a small bottle of wine, crisps, nuts, snacks or chocolate bars. That’s no longer offered. The bar, Upside Down, is still a lovely space, but they no longer serve bar snacks either. Breakfast continues to be very good, especially with the option of freshly cooked eggs. However the boiled eggs that are in the buffet are always cold, not even a bit warm, but proper cold
In my room, I had a some minor issues: both desk lamps weren’t working, and there’s a large black three-metre light fixture just below the ceiling that doesn’t seem to serve any real purpose. The window handle pole, which should twist to allow the window to open, also appears to be broken. A few of the TV channels didn’t work so well, very pixelated/frozen picture that indicated it was losing signal/poor reception. Really annoying when there are only 3 or 4 TV channels in your language and the only one you do want to actually watch is the one that’s faulty!
None of these were major problems, and I didn’t raise them at the time as I prefer not to have someone in the room while I’m working for the sake of small niggles. Plus, it was only a 3 night stay. That said, it does give the impression that the property has become a little neglected over the years.
As a VIP member with the highest status membership, I also didn’t receive a room upgrade despite the hotel not being particularly busy, nor was there any recognition of my status at check-in. Nor was I able to get a late check out due to the hotel being “fully booked” which it wasn’t ( You can check this by doing a dummy booking on the hotel website – at least 12 rooms were available!)
Would I stay here again? Quite possibly. It’s still a pleasant place to stay – it just feels like it could benefit from a little more attention to detail."
