The red-rock Riviera

Agay sits in a sheltered bay between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, right on the edge of the red-rock Massif de l’Estérel, so you get Riviera sparkle with a wild, outdoorsy backdrop. Start slow on the sandy beaches, then wander the seafront for gelato, bakery treats and that “should we just stay here?” feeling.

When you’re ready to roam, hop on the coastal path towards Le Dramont for views of the Île d’Or, a tiny rocky islet topped with a turret like it’s guarding secret treasure. Swap sea for scenery with an Esterel hike, where rust-coloured cliffs meet pine forests and the viewpoints practically demand a camera roll.

Food-wise, keep it deliciously simple: seaside cafés for grilled fish and salade niçoise, picnic supplies for beach-side snacking, and sunset rosé that tastes like you’re winning at holidays. If you want a bigger buzz, Saint-Raphaël is close for markets, marina strolls and boat trips, then it’s back to Agay for a calmer, starry finish. Come for the calm water, stay for the red rocks and the unhurried rhythm. In summer, the bay becomes a playground for paddleboarding and kayaking, and the local train stop makes coastal day trips easy too.
