Giza Palace

"Opened earlier in the year as a soft launch, Giza Palace is a five-star Leading Hotels of the World property, approximately 20 minutes by car from the Pyramids. Located in an urban setting next to Giza Shopping Mall, the surrounding area is rather busy, with congestion and parked cars. The hotel entrance is via an elevated ramp leading to an impressive drop-off area. The two-storey reception is striking, with Art Deco-inspired lighting and a central floral display. Check-in was quick and efficient. We initially stayed in room 3200, a spacious 53m² courtyard-facing room with a Juliet balcony, comfortable king-size bed and generous bathroom with bathtub, separate shower and double sinks. Unfortunately, persistent mechanical vibration and air-conditioning noise continued until midnight and restarted around 8am. We therefore moved to room 2103, which had a lovely large terrace overlooking the restaurant courtyard. However, privacy was limited as the dividing plants were not yet sufficiently tall. This room was considerably quieter, although some mechanical, water and corridor noise remained. Complimentary butler and shoe-shine services are welcome touches. Breakfast offered a good variety, with exceptional fresh fruit, nuts and baklava, alongside pastries, breads, cold cuts, Asian dishes and a good egg station. Outdoor seating was particularly pleasant. Disappointments included the orange juice, which was not fresh, and rather slow coffee service. The swimming pool was pleasantly warm, but sunshine is restricted by the surrounding buildings. In November, much of the pool is shaded by mid-afternoon and it closes at sunset (around 5pm). The pool music was unnecessarily loud and would benefit from a more relaxing atmosphere, particularly as rooms overlook the courtyard. Mohammed at the pool deserves special mention for his friendliness and welcoming service. The complimentary spa is arguably one of the hotel’s strongest features. Excellent facilities include an 80–90°C dry sauna, steam room, 14°C cold plunge and six-point hydrotherapy pool. The reclining and seated hydrotherapy stations are particularly enjoyable. The relaxation area is rather small, with only eight loungers, and noise from the hydrotherapy facilities can carry across. Cinnamon water and ginger tea are thoughtful additions. Overall: An attractive new luxury hotel with an impressive reception, spacious rooms, good breakfast and excellent complimentary spa facilities. However, room noise, limited terrace privacy, slow breakfast service and loud pool music need attention. There are some teething problems from the soft launch, but the hotel has considerable potential to deliver a more polished five-star experience."
