Podgora Holidays

Pebbles, pines and big blue views

Podgora is that easy-going little spot on Croatia’s Makarska Riviera where pine-clad mountains tumble straight down to a long, pebbly beach. The vibe’s low-rise, barefoot and very “evening stroll with gelato”. A seafront promenade runs the length of town, dotted with cafés, ice-cream kiosks and konobas serving grilled fish, calamari and carafes of local wine.

By day, it’s all about the Adriatic. Bag a sunbed, dip into ridiculously clear water, or wander along the shore towards quieter coves. You can hire pedalos, kayaks or paddleboards, or join a boat trip out to neighbouring islands like Hvar and Brač. Back on land, rent bikes and follow the coastal path, or wander up to the little harbour and war memorials for big views and a dash of history. Makarska’s a short hop away for a livelier harbour, more shops and bars if you fancy cranking things up a notch.

Look up and you’ll see Biokovo mountain towering behind town, with hiking trails and the Skywalk viewpoint within day-trip reach if you’re happy swapping flip-flops for something sturdier. Evenings are wonderfully simple: sunset over the islands, kids on bikes along the promenade, and the clink of cutlery from waterfront terraces. If you like your Croatia with beach days, boat rides and big scenery, but without full-on resort chaos, Podgora makes a blissfully low-key, laid-back base.
