Croatia with city swagger
Rijeka’s the Istrian Riviera’s cool, culture-packed cousin: a proper port city with sea views, street life and a little industrial edge. Set on Kvarner Bay, it’s less polished promenade and more characterful Croatian city break, with grand old buildings, busy markets, harbour scenes and beaches within easy reach.
Korzo’s the place to start. This pedestrianised main street is Rijeka’s social spine, lined with shops, cafés and handsome architecture. From there, climb or bus up to Trsat Castle for big views over the city, bay and islands beyond. Back at sea level, the Central Market is brilliant for a flavour of local life, while the Maritime and History Museum and St Vitus Cathedral add a hit of culture between coffee stops.
Food is hearty, coastal and wonderfully unpretentious. Think fresh fish, scampi, black risotto, pasta, grilled meats and konoba-style restaurants where lunch can quietly become an event. You’re also well placed for beach time at Sablićevo, day trips to Opatija or island adventures towards Krk and Cres. Rijeka’s ideal if you like your seaside break with grit, soul and plenty to do. Harbour mornings, castle views, Adriatic swims, late dinners. It’s Croatia with the volume turned to city mode.
