Riviera charm with a chestnut twist
Lovran is the Istrian Riviera in softer, storybook mode. Set just along the coast from Opatija, this elegant little town brings together grand old villas, a pretty harbour, mountain-backed views and the glittering blue of Kvarner Bay. It has that classic Adriatic trick: looking wonderfully relaxed while quietly giving you loads to do.
The old town is small but full of character, with stone lanes, colourful shutters and café terraces made for slow morning potters. The Lungomare promenade links Lovran with Opatija, so sea-view strolls come with bathing spots, historic architecture and plenty of “shall we stop for coffee?” moments. Behind the town, Mount Učka rises dramatically, bringing walking trails, viewpoints and a wilder side to your seaside escape.
Food is a proper highlight. Expect fresh seafood, scampi, grilled fish, pasta, olive oil and local wines, plus Lovran’s famous chestnuts in autumn and cherries in season. It’s elegant without being showy, peaceful without being sleepy. Lovran’s perfect if you want Riviera atmosphere with a smaller-town feel. Swim in the morning, wander the promenade in the afternoon, then settle into a harbour-side dinner as the bay turns gold. Very polished. Very peaceful. Very Croatia.
