"Now, I’m a man who believes in arriving early, but turning up a full three hours before check-in is usually asking for a polite, apologetic smile and a long wait on a hard chair. I had fully prepared myself for the worst: drop the bags, flee the blistering Vienna heatwave, and find a strong coffee to pass the time until 3:00 PM.But from the moment I set foot inside, I knew this place was different.
The building itself is an absolute dote—historic, grand, and beautifully maintained, with a lovely seating area outside that is just crying out for a man to sit down with the paper and watch the world go by. Inside, the welcome wasn’t just warm; it was a godsend. They immediately handed me a glass of refreshing Vienna spring water, which, in that heat, felt like a small miracle. When I asked about leaving my luggage, the lady at the desk smiled and told me the room was already a hundred percent ready. No fuss, no drama. I was registered in two shakes of a lamb's tail and on my way upstairs. They offered to help with the bags, but sure, I’m independent enough, so I declined.
The room was a joy. Modern comfort wrapped in old-world charm, with a king-size bed that practically begged you to stretch out, a proper bathroom, a well-stocked coffee machine, AND a real kettle (bless them). Best of all, the air conditioning was working like a dream—a proper breath of fresh air.The building is full of gorgeous original features, including a grand staircase and a magnificent old cage elevator. It looks like something out of a classic movie on the outside, but thanks be to goodness, it works like a modern charm on the inside.
Over the course of my stay, I chatted with several members of the staff. They are the absolute heart of the place. Never too busy for a bit of casual chat, asking how I was enjoying their beautiful city, and giving the kind of gold-standard insider advice on what to see and where to eat that you just can't find in a guidebook. Even when I had a random craving and asked for a jug of milk to bring up to the room for a proper cup of my coffee, it was no trouble at all. (Yes I bring my own coffee when travelling) You get the feeling they genuinely want you to feel at home.
Now, I am an Irish man, so by law, I am required to find at least one thing to nitpick about. I searched high and low, I really did. And finally, I found it: up on the fourth floor, there is a picture hanging on the wall, and it is slightly crooked.
Yes, my friends. That is the absolute sum total of my complaints. This hotel offers fantastic value for money in a perfect location, staffed by people who are a credit to the hospitality trade. The people of Vienna are a clean and friendly lot anyway, but this hotel has a bit of magic all its own. My only regret is that I couldn't stay longer.
Keep an eye out for me next year—I’ll definitely be back. (And I might just straighten that picture myself!)"
