Agaete Holidays

A pretty town with a backdrop of blockbuster scenery

Nestled on the northwestern coast of Gran Canaria, the oh-so-pretty village of Agaete has whitewashed houses and a lovely valley-side locale surrounded by mountains, which firmly ups the ante in the dramatic scenery stakes.

Hiking trails spread out from the town like spider’s legs. Pick a not-too-hot day to set off, and be rewarded with views of the sea from lofty vantage points. The jagged volcanic crags that stretch into the Atlantic create some pretty awesome sights and the island's lush vegetation flourishes in the humid spring temperatures.

Agaete merges with Puerto de la Nieves, a fishing village where you can catch a ferry to Tenerife in fewer than 90 minutes. You could also just come here for a stroll to admire the blue-windowed buildings, find somewhere for a fresh fish supper, and linger to admire the golden sunsets. Heavenly.

Your Agaete questions, answered

Summers are hot and dry, but the cooler shoulder months might suit you better if you're here for hiking. September is particularly lovely, and there are carnivals in late February.
Exceptional. Don’t miss the trail from Puerto de las Nieves for a view of the Dragon’s Tail, a cliff formation that reaches out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Local fish, such as jewfish grouper, but don’t miss the tropical fruits grown in the valley. Try Europe’s only coffee that’s grown here, too.
