Luxury meets history in Porto

Classic meets contemporary at the five-star PortoBay Flores, which is partly housed in a 16th century palace. Rubbing shoulders with Misericórdia Church on Rua das Flores, it doesn’t get much more central than this.

With Bolsa Palace and Se Cathedral both within five minutes’ walk of the hotel, you’ll easily tick off the sights on your list from here. The historic Ribeira district is all cobblestone streets, characterful townhouses and medieval landmarks. One of the best ways to explore the city is the Museu da Cidade – a museum made up of 17 different stations scattered around Porto. Start at Reservatório in the west of the city and hit them all, or pick and choose the ones you fancy. The different spots cover off art and artefacts spanning centuries.

When you’re done pounding the pavement, you’ll revel in the chance to relax back at the hotel. From the peaceful surroundings of the patio to the cosy reading room, and even an indoor pool, this place isn’t short on spots that are tailor-made for unwinding. The on-site spa, meanwhile, delivers treatments based on classic Indian and Thai remedies to soothe mind, body, and soul.

The on-site Bistro Flores serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the former halls of the restored palace. Elsewhere the Bar dos Maias opens its doors from mid-morning and offers cocktails and light bites throughout the day. If you fancy heading out for a bite, the streets of Porto are teeming with great places to eat or to indulge in a glass of fortified wine – be a shame not to on these historic streets.
