An under-the-radar Greek town
This sunny Greek village is set on a gently curving bay in a lovely spot on the southern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula (a region known as Messenia), looking out to a scattering of islands in the Ionian Sea.
Finikounda feels wonderfully and authentically Greek, with whitewashed, red-roofed buildings hosting tavernas and shops lining cobbled streets – the perfect place for a wander after spending a morning on the glorious Finikounda beach. If you’ve got a longer stroll in mind, follow the trail to the ancient Venetian watchtower for some superb views.
You’ll also see Finikounda written as Foinikounta, but it’s the same place. Whatever you call it, it’s not as well-known as other resorts in these parts, so it has a lovely quiet feel and feels like you’ve been let in on a secret pocket of Greece – yours to decide whether or not to share your discovery!
