Making travel accessible and affordable to everyone has allowed more people to experience the joy of tourism. However, with increasing number of visitors also comes the risk of over tourism. We need to carefully manage visitor numbers to ensure we protect the people and places that make our destinations so special.
It’s for this reason that we’re looking to launch more and more alternative destinations that can deliver brilliant holidays for our customers. This will not only mean fewer crowds in popular resorts, but it’ll also help to spread the economic benefits to new areas (SDG 8 and 10).
Akureyri, in the north of Iceland, is one of our new destinations that does exactly that. Customers can see some of Iceland’s most magnificent natural wonders away from the well-trodden sights of the Golden Circle and Reykjavik city centre, bringing the benefits of tourism to a new community (SDG 11).
Arnheidur Johannsdottir, Managing Director, Visit North Iceland: “It is great that we’re able to welcome easyJet holidays customers to Akureyri North Iceland. As a lesser explored area of our beautiful country, we have so much to offer, such as incredible scenery and of course, the Aurora Borealis!
“We are so pleased that easyJet holidays is helping promote alternative destinations to those who love to explore, reducing busy crowds in popular areas, and spreading economic benefits across our wonderful country. Local tourism providers are looking forward to welcoming easyJet customers and guiding them to our powerful waterfalls, geothermal spas and snow-covered mountains”.
