Within 10 miles of Tenerife’s busy capital of Santa Cruz, is the quiet Las Caletillas resort. Ideally located to enjoy some of the best entertainment on the island while retaining a relaxed atmosphere, this little village is a great choice for both families and couples.
The Canary Islands are famous for their black volcanic sands and the beach of Las Caletillas does not disappoint. The black sand and pebbles stretch along three coves and makes it the perfect place for enjoying the sunshine and having a paddle in the sea. There are more volcanic beaches to discover further along the coast and some with golden sands if you fancy a change.
There are shops and restaurants in the resort itself and evening entertainment is provided by a good selection of bars. Though Las Caletillas itself is quite small, there is a promenade which will take you to the larger Candelaria which has a whole host of restaurants and beaches of its own.
Las Caletillas is ideally placed as a base for day trips further afield. As it is so close, a visit to Santa Cruz is a must. Great shopping, spectacular skyscrapers and delicious food and drink are all on offer here. The nearby La Laguna is also highly recommended. This town has plenty of history to discover and the beautiful cathedral is well worth a visit. Head further south and you’ll find the popular holiday resorts of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. In Teide National Park you can also get a cable car up the highest mountain in Spain. With no end to the exploring you can do, there is something here for everyone.
Just next to Las Caletillas is the charming fishing village of Candelaria. On the water’s edge is a Roman Catholic basilica which is dedicated to the patron of the Canary Islands. The village really comes into its own on a Sunday when the locals get together to attend mass and the shops stay open all day. A fantastic selection of local restaurants serve up delicious dishes of fresh fish straight from the sea. There is also a stunning volcanic beach along the seafront to enjoy.
Playa de Las Teresitas
This gorgeous beach can be found just north of the village of San Andrés where a good selection of holiday accommodation can also be found. Playa de Las Teresitas is one of the few beaches not to have black sand on Tenerife. This was not always the case however the white sand was imported in 1973 from Spanish Sahara to create an artificial beach. Since then, it has become one of the most popular beach spots on the island, and you can expect a chilled-out atmosphere here throughout the summer months - perfect for a peaceful breakaway.
The historic centre of La Laguna was the ancient capital of the Canary Islands and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The old and quirky streets of the town centre are full of shops, restaurants and bars for you to discover. There are plenty of students in this area due to the University of La Laguna which has resulted in a vibrant nightlife.
