Escape to Iceland’s northernmost town
With a hard-to-beat location in Siglufjordur, just over an hours’ drive from Akureyri Airport through the scenic countryside of northern Iceland, Hotel Siglo is a thoroughly serene spot. It’s pulled right up to the marina and boasts a pretty mountain backdrop, so stellar views won’t be hard to come by. And it’s got plenty of opportunities in the way of adventures, too.
Thanks to its remote location and low levels of light pollution, Siglufjordur is a great place to seek out the Northern Lights between the months of October and March. The area is blessed with an abundance of hiking trails, too, and in the winter months is transformed with a blanket of snow that brings opportunities for skiing and snowmobiling.
In town meanwhile, you’ll find a smattering of cafés, bars, and restaurants, and even a museum which details the town’s history as an international hub for herring fishing. Although the herring industry has shut up shop in the town, the heritage is still alive and well – and super interesting, so be sure and make time for a visit to the Herring Era Museum.
As for the hotel, you can expect stylish and comfortable lodgings that come with a choice of mountain or sea views. The on-site restaurant faces the marina, so you can watch the fishermen at work while you tuck into their spoils.
