Holidays to Rhone Alpes

Found in the south-east of France between the borders of Italy, Switzerland and Provence is the spectacular Rhône-Alpes. Boasting eight natural parks and an extensive range of different landscapes, from mountains, vineyards, dense forests, valleys and olive groves to streaming lakes, slopes glistening with snow and glaciers- the Rhone Alpes really are one of the most scenic areas of France.

The high alps are also a great centre for outdoor activities year around - including canoeing and kayaking, hiking and mountain biking, mountain climbing etc. Each year some of the most exciting stages in the Tour de France take place here, including the great climb at Alpe d'Huez.

For a true experience of French gastronomy head to Lyon and sample the soft St-Felicien and St Marcellin cheeses, not forgetting the traditional Andouillettes à la Lyonnaise (tripe sausages stuffed with veal served with fried onions). Make sure you pick up the regions famous chewy almond nougat from the markets in Montelimar, which has been enjoyed since the 17th century.

Rhone Alpes Holidays- perfect for culture and art enthusiasts

Find yourself being swept away by the extensive heritage in Valence with its main attraction the Romanesque Cathedral St-Apollinaire and impressive Renaissance building of Maison des Tetes. The Musee Fauvre in Chambery, Savoie holds a fantastic collection of Impressionist paintings and don’t forget to explore Chambery’s Fontaine des Elephants or Les Charmettes. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere in Grenoble whilst admiring the 13th century buildings such as Collegiale St-Andre and the Musee de la Resistance or maybe it’s the wealth of modern art at the Musee d’Art Moderne and Gothic architecture of Notre-Dame d’Esperance in Loire that is more appealing. Find your way through the labyrinth of cobbled alleyways, Renaissance palaces and two Roman amphitheatres in Lyon before making a trip to Presqu’ile where you will find the Place Bellecour with its statues of Louis XIV, Palais St-Pierre and Musee des Beaux Arts.

Head to the regions capital- Lyon and spend your days wandering through its gorgeous gardens and markets before enjoying a performance at the Opera House or theatre. Or maybe it’s the delightful market town and medieval village of Motelimar that takes your fancy. Nature fanatics should head to Ardeche, where they will be overwhelmed by one of the most breathtaking canyons in France formed by the city’s notorious fast-flowing river before exploring the spectacular gorges either by canoe, foot or why not challenge yourself to some white-water rafting? The area is also home to quaint villages, historic caves, various museums and ongoing vineyards. A visit to the Glaciers in the Alps at Chamonix will give you a fantastic chance to take a look at a glacier from the inside out with a trip to the Crotte de la Mer de Glace. Take a cable car to the highest peak, Mont Blanc and admire the breathtaking view. The capital of Haute-Savoie, Annecy is overflowing with activities to fill your day from an array of water sports to hiking, cycling, riding or maybe just simply relaxing by its water edge. True adrenaline junkies may want to test their nerve with a paraglide from Haut Vol, Chamonix or spend the day at the ski school in St Mortiz before exploring the medieval village and streets of Megeve. Take the opportunity to live like a Roman and enjoy the thermal baths in Thermes Nationaux in Savoi.
