ANDALUSIA’S BEATING HEART

You can’t visit Spain’s Costa del Sol without cutting inland to Antequera. Known as the heart of Andalusia, the city of Antequera has more than 50 significant monuments, archaeological sites, and prehistoric ruins, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take in all the sights of the city, including Arco de los Gigantes, the Mirador de las Almenillas viewing point, the amazing Alcazaba, and the impressive church, Real Colegiata Santa María la Mayor. A visit to Antequera bullring is also a cultural experience not to be missed. Try the local fare at one of the city’s traditional restaurants, where you can tuck into tapas in the historic centre, or head to Plaza de Toros, where you can try traditional dishes like porra antequerana – a tasty thick tomato soup – and porcón, a local sausage.

Located between the region’s four major cities of Sevilla, Málaga, Granada, and Córdoba, Antequera is at Andalucía’s geographical crossroads. The city is situated at the foot of the El Torcal mountain range and is a short distance from some of Spain’s most stunning natural beauty; Fuente de Piedra, a saltwater lagoon that’s one of the few European nesting spots for the greater flamingo; the gorge and lakes of El Chorro; and the striking La Peña de los Enamorados (The Lovers’ Rock), which looms over the city. One thing’s for sure, you’ll fall in love with the charming city of Antequera.
