A Cretan gem with an artistic past
Although its links with a world-famous artist have put Fodele firmly on the map, this charming Cretan village has plenty more going for it than that. Believed to be the birthplace of the Renaissance painter El Greco (whose real name was Doménikos Theotokópoulos), Fodele is a small, cosy village that’s surrounded by lush greenery and features picture-perfect orange and lemon trees lining its streets.
Fodele holidays aren’t just about the visuals, though, with a scattering of friendly tavernas making it the perfect place to take a deep dive into traditional Cretan food, too. Add to that a clutch of pretty churches and monasteries, a museum dedicated to El Greco and a number of great beaches with wide stretches of sand, and it all combines to make holidays to Fodele perfect for anyone who’s seeking a relaxing break within lush and gorgeous surroundings.
