Disappointing end-of-season stay – hotel has potential but lacks care and management
This was our first visit to Bulgaria and we’re so looking forward to it after hearing people say how beautiful Bulgaria was .
We were a party of 6 adults, 1 toddler and a baby . 2 of our party senior adults .
We stayed at Hotel Sunrise Blue Magic in Obzor in September 2025 and unfortunately left feeling quite disappointed. The hotel itself has potential, but sadly, the lack of communication from staff , poor management, and end-of-season attitude from staff really let it down.
On a positive note, the receptionist was pleasant on arrival, and we appreciated the thoughtful food hamper provided at our late-night check-in – a nice touch after a long journey. The rooms were spacious, basic but clean, and the mini fridge stocked with complimentary drinks and snacks was a welcome extra.
However, the positives end there. The hotel sits on a rather barren stretch with very little nearby apart from other hotels. Strangely, guests from other hotels seemed to wander in freely, yet we were not allowed to visit theirs. There is no security presence, so anyone can walk in, which didn’t feel safe – especially for families with young children.
The staff (aside a few members of the entertainment team) came across as miserable, rude and unhelpful, often using “end of season” as an excuse for poor service. If the hotel is still accepting paying guests, the standard of facilities should remain the same as in peak season.
Wi-Fi was unreliable, and the password changes every few days with no communication from reception about this.
Restaurant had a wide selection of food but was repetitive, often cold, and clearly just leftovers being used up before the hotel closed on the 30th. I didn’t dare try any of the meat dishes. Alcoholic drinks were served extremely strong and unpleasant, and it was quite shocking to witness guests drinking excessively, then physically fighting, and shouting in the corridors late at night 2am some nights — all of this happening in front of children — with staff and local police doing very little to intervene.
Some parents not even monitoring what their children were up to as they were knocking on peoples rooms and running away just fur some fun due to absolute boredom as there was nothing for them to do in the hotel.
The pool area was disappointing: the pool was freezing, rarely cleaned, and surrounded by litter and spilt drinks that attracted swarms of wasps. Not once during our 10 day stay did we see the pool areas being washed down or cleaned.
The pool attendant appeared to spend most of the day on his phone or asleep. Some days loud, repetitive music played, while on others there was no background music or entertainment at all.
The beach, although warmer compared to the pool, was poorly maintained with weeds and rubbish on the beach. The beach bar offered only beer, wine, and soft drinks, and with just one person serving, meaning at times queues were long.
The à la carte restaurant served lovely food which was complimentary for one night of our stay , but the service was terrible. We waited over an hour for starters, which is difficult when dining with a toddler and a baby. Our table was booked for 7pm and we still had not received our pre ordered starters at 8.15pm . We then complained , once the food did arrive , everything came all at once, making the meal then rushed and uncomfortable. We were still eating our mains when the deserts came out!
Outside the hotel, there was little to do, especially as most places were closed in September. The minibus service from the hotel into Obzor was always full, and the alternative was a long 30-minute walk. When we reached Obzor everything was closed . It has a beautifully clean large beach but we were the only ones on it.
Desperate to get out of the hotel as much as possible we took a taxi to Sunny Beach (about 40 minutes away by taxi) which was okay , a lot more going on and a most shops, bars and restaurants were open, and we took a second day trip to the beautiful town of Nesebar, a highlight of our trip, but sadly that’s because we were desperate to get away from the hotel for a change of scenery.
Evening entertainment was non-existent within the hotel, and outdoor shows are in a nearby hotel which were good but repetitive and too cold to sit through as they are outside. A special mention, however, goes to Boj from the entertainment team, who was genuinely friendly and seemed to be one of the few staff members trying to make guests’ stays enjoyable. The walk to the outside entertainment is in the pitch black. In fact the first night we went , the reception staff sent us the long way round which was a 30 min walk in the cold only to find out if other guests the next day that it was a 5-7 min walk via a cut through .
Overall, we paid just under £700 per adult for a 10-night all-inclusive stay, so we didn’t expect luxury, but we did expect basic hospitality, cleanliness, and a safe, pleasant environment. Sadly, this hotel didn’t deliver.
After a very difficult year, we were hoping for a relaxing family break — but instead, we were counting down the days until we could go home. I wouldn’t return to this hotel or Obzor and certainly would not recommend travelling to Bulgaria in September, especially if you’re hoping for warm holiday weather, good service, and a proper holiday atmosphere."
