Why fly to Strasbourg?
Strasbourg is where France and Germany meet for a (really good) cup of coffee – a city break of canals, cafes, cobbles and half-timbered houses that put fairytales to shame.
Exploring the sights of Strasbourg
The Grande Île, a UNESCO-listed treasure, is like stepping into a history book with better lighting (and none of that musky old book smell, obviously). Strasbourg Cathedral owns the skyline with its intricate architecture and jaw-dropping spire, while the surrounding squares buzz with life, cafes and people-watching spots. You’ll find centuries-old bakeries next to lively street performers and buildings with plenty of stories to tell – and gargoyles, but they’re a bit… stony-faced.
Culture in Strasbourg
But this city break isn’t all sepia-toned nostalgia. Petite France steals hearts with its winding canals and whimsical bridges, and the European Parliament will remind you that Strasbourg is as forward-looking as it is picturesque. Come December, the city transforms into a festive dreamscape with its legendary Christmas market – where you can drink mulled wine, peruse handcrafted trinkets and stare at more twinkling lights than you’d want to untangle each year. The smell of roasting chestnuts is practically unavoidable (and impossible to resist).
Scenery of Strasbourg
Just a short jaunt out of the city, the Alsace wine route promises a different kind of magic. Rolling vineyards give way to postcard villages where every half-timbered house seems designed to charm. From crisp Rieslings to honeyed Gewürztraminers, the wines here are a revelation – and the tasting rooms are worth the trip(s) alone.
