This year's eclipse may be over, but for many Brits the planning for next year’s has already begun, as travellers look ahead to what astronomers are calling the eclipse of the century.
Since last week’s celestial event, easyJet has seen an ‘eclipse effect’ with a 70% boost in bookings to destinations touted to offer best views of the 2027 eclipse, including to Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Gibraltar and Egypt.
Taking place on 2 August 2027, the total solar eclipse will pass across parts of southern Europe and North Africa, putting destinations such as Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt firmly on the radar of eclipse-chasing travellers. easyJet flies to four destinations along the path of totality from 11 UK airports, giving Brits plenty of options to experience the spectacle for themselves.
Bookings to Spain including Seville, Almeria, and Malaga are up 69% since last week's eclipse, with travellers drawn by the chance to experience up to four minutes and 39 seconds of totality in Andalusia while enjoying a classic Mediterranean holiday. Gibraltar, which sits directly on the path of totality, is also seeing strong demand, with bookings up 29%, as eclipse chasers seek out its unique vantage point at the gateway between Europe and Africa.
In North Africa, bookings to Tunisia including Enfidha and Djerba are up 189% as travellers look to experience the eclipse against a dramatic desert backdrop, while Rabat and Marrakesh in Morocco, one of the first countries the path of totality crosses after leaving Spain, is also proving increasingly popular, with bookings up 27%.
Meanwhile, Luxor in Egypt is emerging as one of the most sought-after eclipse destinations of all. Near Luxor, totality will last an impressive six minutes and 22 seconds, making it the longest total solar eclipse visible until 2114 and a truly once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity.
With the ancient temples and monuments of the Nile Valley providing a breath-taking backdrop, bookings to Egypt including Luxor are up 29% as travellers plan ahead for what promises to be an extraordinary combination of natural wonder and cultural discovery.
Kevin Doyle, easyJet's UK Country Manager, said:
"Whether you missed this year's eclipse or are looking to witness one of nature's greatest shows again, the 2027 total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-generation travel opportunity. We are already seeing growing interest from Brits keen to experience it for themselves, and destinations such as Egypt, Gibraltar, and Spain offer an incredible combination of an unforgettable celestial event and a truly memorable holiday."
