Why fly to Tromsø?
Being cold just got cool. Welcome to Tromsø, a city break where the northern lights dazzle, huskies are your best mates and snowmobiles beat taxis every time.
Exploring the sights of Tromsø
Tromsø’s colourful wooden houses look like they’ve wandered out of a Disney film, and that sets the scene for a fairytale city break. If you book at cheap flight to to Tromsø from September to March, you can hunt for the northern lights: an otherworldly show of greens, pinks and purples that dance across the sky. The Lyngen Alps and their snow-dusted peaks set the stage for snowy adventures, and Tromsø’s icy fjords are home to humpbacks and orcas gliding through the blue. Back in the city, the Arctic Cathedral glows like something out of Frozen, the Polar Museum brings a dose of Arctic drama and Tromsø’s waterfront twinkles with boats bobbing against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
Scenery, food and nature of Tromsø
If that all sounds a bit cold for a weekend break, Tromsø’s comfort food is the perfect way to thaw out. Feast on soft, sticky cinnamon buns and call it culture and try Kvæfjordkake – a fluffy meringue-topped sponge cake layered with cream and almonds. Or if you’re keen to ‘immerse’ yourself in the city’s way of life, a bracing dunk in the Arctic Ocean should do it. Of course, you’ll need to then reward your bravery (stupidity) with a rejuvenating recharge in Pust, a harbourside sauna shaped like a traditional fish drying rack (which, unless you’re familiar with drying fish, you probably wouldn’t spot). Need to keep those muscles warm? Skip the cable car and hike up the Sherpa staircase for views of Tromsø and its jaw-dropping landscape, before treating yourself to a steaming cup of coffee at the top (and another cinnamon bun, right?).
