Explore the great outdoors
Akureyri is the gateway to some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. If you hire a car, you can reach the stunning Godafoss waterfall in a little over 30 minutes. And the awe-inspiring Dettifoss waterfall is just over two hours away. You’ll also want to explore the Eyjafjörður Fjord, which is about as good as it gets for nature lovers and hikers. Oh, and of course – you’ve got to experience the Northern Lights.
Pack your swimming costume
We can’t talk about Iceland without mentioning their thermal pools. One of the most popular with residents is the Akureyri Thermal Pool, which you’ll find in the heart of the city. It has two outdoor pools, water slides, four hot tubs, a steam bath, a sauna and more. And if that gets too busy, you can visit the slightly quieter indoor Glerárlaug Thermal Pool.
City-centre attractions
With fewer than 20,000 residents, Akureyri is a small city with an impressive arts scene, including a number of museums and galleries. If you’re green-fingered, you should head to the botanical gardens, home to over 7,000 species of plants (imagine waiting for the last frost in Iceland). Or how about a trip to Jólahúsið – or ‘Christmas House’ – which is open throughout the year? It’s either fabulously festive or brilliantly bizarre, depending on whether you visit in winter or summer.
