The picturesque town in the foothills of the Black Forest is a favourite of the mega rich and sporting elite and it is easy to see why. With an elegant social playground of decadent casinos, thermal spas and a pretty racecourse, the town harks back to a more refined era. Centuries ago visitors were attracted by the chance to recuperate in the spas or flirt with the roulette wheel and these days are no different. During the 2006 football world cup it was the wives and girlfriends of England’s players who came here to shop and be entertained and monarchs from around the world have stolen a few moments exploring the lush town.
There is a stunning park in the centre of town nestled on the fringe of the Black Forest which is worth exploring and a bubbling stream weaves through the green landscape offering a soundtrack of relaxation. If you would like some pampering select one of the city’s thermal spas. Be careful to do your research first as some still adhere to the traditional no clothing rules requiring you to strip off and go nude. There is plenty of delicious food to sample and due to its proximity to the French border croissants and pastries fill the cafes of Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden giving you a chance to indulge your sweet tooth.
If you’re planning a trip to the casino be sure to dress appropriately. Men will be required to wear collared shirts and jackets to gain entry or you can go downstairs to play the machines.
