Things to do in Split
Split flights bring you to a city with an abundance of things to do, and gorgeous places to see. To kick off your trip and get the lay of the land, there are two great places to visit for a bird's eye view of the town. The first is on top of the 57-metre-tall St. Duje's bell tower. There are 200 steps to the top, but it's well worth a climb for the view. The second is from the Telegrin peak on Marjan Hill. It's much taller than the bell tower, at 174 metres, with even more steps to the top. 314 in total.
If you do decide to visit Marjan Hill, you should allow for more time than you would think. The hill is part of a wider nature area known as the Marjan Forest Park, with some lovely woodland walking trails. In the summer, you'll see plenty of locals sunbathing on the rocks along the water's edge. Spending an afternoon here is one of the best ways to relax in the city.
Another great way to unwind is to spend some time at Riva, the city's pretty, tree-lined promenade. There's a relatively busy harbour nearby, so it's a good place to grab a drink and watch the boats coming and going. It has a very lively atmosphere in the summer, with the seafront bars and restaurants catering to many cruise ship passengers passing through. This is also the best place to pick up souvenirs from the many little stalls set up selling inexpensive trinkets like pens and magnets.
Visiting Diocletian's Palace
One thing you'll notice right off your flight from the UK to Split is that this city is very old! It was built around the 4th century Diocletian's Palace, a sprawling fortress constructed for the Roman emperor. The ruins are well preserved and makeup around half of the city's UNESCO-listed old town. You'll be able to see most of the ruins simply by strolling around. For example, the city's central square, Peristil Square, was once a ceremonial area where Emperor Diocletian addressed the public.
If you want to get a clearer vision of what the fortress would've looked like in its heyday, you can visit the museum and venture down into the excellently preserved palace basement.
Day trips from Split to Solta
For a quiet beach experience, consider a trip to the Croatian island of Solta. Ferries and catamarans will get you there in between 30 to 60 minutes. There are lots of hidden coves and beautiful bays to explore. Before hopping back on a boat, be sure to try a glass of Dobricic, a Croatian red wine made from local grapes grown on the island. It's a tart wine that tastes a bit like cherries.
Split's food scene
Split is a very popular tourist destination, so it's easy to find all sorts of international cuisines here. But if you're looking to try something local, tuck into some Soparnik. This is a very thin Swiss chard-filled pie believed to have been invented in Poljica, about 30km west along the coast. It's a tasty and surprisingly filling snack that you'll find from many street vendors throughout the city.
