What is it and why is it happening?
From 1 June 2021, new requirements for authenticating online payments have been introduced in the UK.
This follows on from the introduction of requirements for authenticating online payments in Europe on 1 January 2021.
Strong Customer Authentication, required under the revised “Payment Services Directive (PSD2)”, is a regulatory requirement to reduce fraud and make online payments more secure for you.
How will it affect you?
When you pay online, you may see an additional step to complete. Your bank might ask you to authenticate the payment by completing a bank check with personal information or an action. Once instructed, follow the on-screen steps requested by your bank.
Strong customer authentication requires the use of at least two of the following three elements:
1. Something you know (e.g., password or PIN)
2. Something you have (e.g., phone or hardware token)
3. Something you are (e.g., fingerprint or face recognition)
Note: As this is bank controlled and initiated there may be times when this additional authentication is not required, and the payment will process successfully without any action required by you.
What should you do to prepare?
Check with your bank
Each bank may do it slightly differently, so it’s important that you familiarise yourself with your bank’s specific approach and set up your authentication in advance.
Make sure your bank has all your latest contact details and you have the latest version of their mobile banking app.
Securely save your payment card for future purchases with us
Adding a saved card on your easyJet account may reduce the likelihood that your bank will request authentication, as we have already established the secure authentication with your bank.
You can do this by selecting ‘securely save these card details for faster payments with easyJet in the future’, in the payment section when making a booking on our website or mobile app, alternatively you can do this in ‘Manage Bookings’.
Use Apple Pay
Using Apple Pay (on the iOS easyJet: Travel app) ensures a simple, quick and secure way to pay. As it uses biometric authentication such as Touch ID or Face ID, you won’t have to go through an additional step.
