Why fly to Praia?
Praia is the vibrant capital of Cape Verde, where Afro-Portuguese heritage is served with an Atlantic breeze and a side of grilled fish (oh, and whole lot of sunshine).
Culture and food of Praia
Praia knows how to do holidays: sunshine, a vibrant town and a lively bar scene. The Plateau district sits smugly above it all, offering ocean views and pastel-coloured architecture. Its streets hum with the energy of markets like Mercado de Sucupira where you’ll find spices, fresh-off-the-boat seafood, fruits and crafts in equal parts chaos and charisma.
Music and nightlife of Praia
Music flows through Praia like blood in its veins. Morna, the island’s soulful soundtrack, drifts from every corner, turning simple strolls into personal concerts. Be sure to experience funaná – a wild, accordion-driven genre of music that’ll have even the most rhythmically challenged tapping a foot (or two). Visit Kebra Canela neighbourhood, the unofficial nightlife headquarters where local bars overflow with laughter, music and the occasional impromptu dance-off. For a more idyllic trip, head to Cidade Velha, just a short jaunt away from the vibrant city streets. This UNESCO site (which is a formal way of saying it’s really, really beautiful) is full of quaint, cobbled streets and an ancient fortress that once warded off pirates.
Beaches and weather of Praia
Of course, all that sightseeing is all well and good, but with a year-round average temperature of 25°C, in Praia it’s quite tempting to do nothing at all. It’s got golden sands, bath-warm water, and a sun that’s out all day – and even when it sets it makes a performance out of it. Come nightfall, you’ll find beachside restaurants buzzing with friendly locals, glorious food and upbeat music: Praia is a paradise where the welcome is as warm as the sea.
