Legend has it that fairies created Lake Bled, and that’s not hard to believe. A beautiful emerald-green lake nestled in Slovenia’s Julian Alps, Lake Bled is famous for the picturesque island in the middle. You can row on the lake or hike along the outskirts to visit waterfalls, and enjoy long lunches at cafes on the water’s edge. There’s no more magical place to spend a well-deserved break.
Lake Bled is located only 50 km from Slovenia’s capital, so book a flight to Ljubljana and you can get there in no time. From Ljubjana airport, you can rent a car or schedule a convenient private transfer to take you to the lake, or hop on the train if you’d rather use public transport. The journey takes you through the beautiful Slovenian countryside, so it’s definitely a trip worth taking.
At Lake Bled, spend your days in the great outdoors. Take leisurely walks along its peaceful shores, or gain a new perspective by hiking up to Bled Castle, a medieval castle perched on a cliff above the lake. Visit the nearby Vintgar Gorge, a famous ravine in Triglav National Park, to walk on wooden boardwalks above the crystal clear Radovna river. Spend an afternoon on the water by renting one of Bled’s iconic wooden rowboats (known as a pletna). No motorboats are allowed on the lake, so you can really relax as you row around the lake and to the island in the middle. Hop out to explore the island and climb the 99 stone steps of the iconic Assumption of Mary Church, where you’ll find panoramic views. Spend the night in charming guesthouses on the lakefront, and you’ll experience a side of Slovenia you never knew existed.
