Iceland is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, with many different things to do and see. However at this time of year one of the draws is the chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Pack camping gear and plenty of warm clothes, hitch-hike out of the city until you find a beautiful spot that takes your fancy. There is so much empty space in Iceland, much of it very photogenic. So long as you are away from the road and farms, and not causing any problems, then this is one of the easiest places to find a wild camping spot.
Set up camp and keep your fingers crossed for the Aurora to appear. The excitement of choosing your own campsite is a real pleasure. But if you would prefer a little more order, then I recommend hiring a car and driving to the Skogar camping ground (www.south.is/en/moya/toy/index/service/skogar-camping-ground) at the foot of Skogafoss waterfall.
Level of Difficulty: Medium (because you are camping out in cold conditions).
What to pack: Warm clothes (check the weather forecast!), woolly hat, headtorch, raingear, sleeping bag, mat and tent, camping stove (you'll need to buy the fuel when you arrive in Iceland. The campsite in Reykjavik often has piles of half-used gas canisters if you choose to stay there).
Best time to go: before April - you need lots of hours of darkness to improve your chances of seeing the aurora.
Set against a backdrop of snow-topped mountains, it’s easy to fall under the spell of this beautiful and bewitching city. Soak up the culture in its many museums and art galleries , while away the hours in a cosy café, or indulge yourself in one of its world class restaurants.
Those looking for fun can partake in a ‘rúntur’ pub crawl or dance the night away in a chic boutique club, while music lovers can check out the latest sounds on city’s cool and creative scene.
