A city break to Georgia is the ultimate hidden gem (the kind that won’t stay hidden for long). With world-class wine, dramatic landscapes and friendly locals, you’ll feel like you’re in on the mainland’s best-kept secret.
For lovers of drama (and not the soap opera kind): hike the Caucasus Mountains. With sharp peaks and deep valleys, they don’t know a thing about being understated. Head to Svaneti to see ancient watchtowers rise through the mist, standing guard for a landscape that’s certainly worth protecting. Down in Kazbegi, you’ll find a hilltop church, framed by Mount Kazbek looming behind in the distance and nearby you’ll find the Dariali Gorge, dramatically cutting through the mountains.
And then there’s Batumi taking things in a totally different direction. Affectionately called the Las Vegas of the Black Sea, visit this coastal city for a playful, vibrant and, well, “neon” adventure. Botanical gardens sprawl along the cliffs, and the promenade buzzes with market stalls, coffee carts and a healthy dose of chaos.
But if jaw-dropping landscapes or garish lights don’t do it for you, then a wine tasting might be in order. Wine in Georgia isn’t just a drink – it’s a 24/7 celebration. In Kakheti, winemaking is practically a national pastime, with traditions as deep as the clay qvevris used to ferment it. Every pour is like a toast to the past, and the food on the table pulls no punches either. Khinkali dumplings burst with flavour (they’re a challenge to eat gracefully), while khachapuri – bread baked with enough molten cheese to count as an experience – dares you to leave a crumb behind.
Beautiful landscapes, tourist-worthy destinations without the tourists, and an excuse to eat molten cheese and call it culture: that’s reason 2376 of why we love travel.
