"A lovely old hotel with lots of character in a very convenient central location. Great friendly staff who were very efficient and welcoming when I arrived and checked in and throughout my stay. Breakfast was excellent with a wide choice of food to choose from. I loved the haggis and black pudding!
I had booked a Premium Double Room because for a 5 night stay, especially at this time of the year with the darker evenings, I was looking for something a little larger and more luxurious than a standard room. On arrival I was informed that I had received a room upgrade to a Double Bed Suite. I am an IHG Gold Elite member and the room upgrade was probably intended as an appreciation of this. The suite on the top floor was very quiet with an extremely comfortable bed. I slept very well throughout my stay and heard very little noise from both inside and outside the hotel. The small sitting room with chairs, table, tv, fridge and room safe was nice to have. The bedroom was quite small but I did like the tv built into the mirror. A wardrobe would have been nice instead of an open rail with a few coat hangers positioned in a very dark corner. The bathroom was large but I didn’t like having to climb in and out of the very high sided bath to use the central shower with shower curtain. I’m not quite as young as I was and did find it a bit difficult.
The suite was good, but being right up on the top floor, in what felt a bit like the servants quarters, I felt that I missed out on some of the character and grandeur of this wonderful old hotel. Instead of a large spacious light and airy room, with high ceilings and carpeted floors, I found my suite was dark with large areas of uncarpeted wooden floor. Although very clean, quiet and comfortable it never felt very warm and welcoming when I returned to it after long days out walking and exploring Glasgow with its wonderful museums and galleries. I’ve still given this review 5 stars because I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel of character but can’t help but feel that I may have appreciated the grandeur of the hotel even more without the upgrade."
