"This freshly refurbished hotel has a real feel of quality. Everything was shiny and new.
Our room was spacious and comfortable. Huge bed and comfy sofa. Several mainstream British TV channels if you want them (and other nations too). But not replenishing the tea/coffee and minibar is mean - I cannot think of any hotel anywhere else I have stayed that doesn't replenish your tea and coffee daily! (Wine in the mini bar would be good too - why just beer?)
The ground floor rooms are susceptible to cockroaches. There is a fumigation service, but we asked to change rooms, and the staff were obliging, giving us a similar room several floors up with a great view. (Contrary to another review, there is a rack on the balcony for hanging wet clothes).
We thought the food in the buffet was superb. Lots of freshly cooked meat and fish (yes, not all stations are manned at all times, but freshly cooked pieces of meat and fish will be left on a griddle so you're not likely to need to wait). Plenty of choice and food for all tastes and needs. I personally loved the fresh figs. Yes, disappointing that there's a premium on fresh orange juice, but this does seem to be a common problem in other hotels. Plenty of other juices are available.
The staff in the restaurants always welcomed you warmly and were good humoured. They were generous with the wine, I'm glad to say! The house wine tasted cheap, but if you wish, there is a selection of premium wine. Fizz at breakfast was a nice touch (especially as it was Christmas, but I sense it's always there!)
Only being given one meal in an a-la-carte, we plumped for Gofio, for Canarian food. We were pleased to be served a cocktail as an aperitif. The food was fine and made a nice change from the buffet. I'm sorry to say that a month on, we can't remember what we ate so it was not memorable for being particularly good or bad! There was some ice cream made with Gofio which was very nice. Yes, it's disappointing to not have been able to eat in both a-la-cartes - Gofio was actually very quiet the night we went, so more easily could have been accommodated.
The complimentary drinks selection was good - the brandy and rum I tried were very nice. The Sangria was like rocket fuel, but I'm not complaining! Disappointingly the only beer was San Miguel (misleading described as "local"), considering the really local Dorada is far nicer. Premium (branded) spirits are also on offer.
Around the pool, there were plenty of loungers for everyone, and a few "Bali beds". The view from the lounger area by reception is a wide sea vista. (Some may mention the shanty town in front of the hotel - this is not directly the hotel's fault, and is in fact a symptom of mass tourism's effect on housing in the Canaries.) The selfish practise of reserving loungers with towels isn't officially permitted (there were signs), but was tolerated nonetheless. It was also unnecessary - there were more than enough loungers to go around!
The larger half of the pool was freezing cold, shockingly so. There is an infinity pool, but it's for "Club" members only (which they don't tell you when showing you the pictures in the advertising!). The smaller half of the main pool often had exercise classes in it, so there wasn't much space to swim. I'm sure it's fine in the summer.
The evening entertainment was ok, if repetitive. Every night there was some variation on a lounge jazz singer or duo. I remember on Christmas Day there was a very talented guitarist in the corner of the restaurant, but you could hardly hear him - I'd loved for him to have played in the evening. Residents are free to sample the food and entertainment across the road in the bigger Bahia Principe hotel.
Being newly refurbished, there were one or two small snagging issues. There are drainage channels around the pool area with pebbles in - these pebbles are a trip hazard (I was constantly kicking them and others were too). The one immediately outside the reception, pool side, has one lip higher than the other so has to be stepped over consciously. Also, for accessibility, please ensure there are handrails on all the steps, not just the main staircases.
(Oh, and another polite request for staff for next Christmas - please add some more Christmas songs to the restaurant playlist! The playlist was very short, mostly consisted of different versions of the one song - Feliz Navidad!)"
