Beautiful beaches and serene marshlands
Tucked into the far southwest corner of Spain, the town of Punta Umbría grew around a hilltop watchtower built in the 14th century to warn its people against invasions. Things are a little more carefree these days, and Punta Umbría mostly attracts keen beachgoers in the wonderfully sunny summer months. In the height of the season, river boats connect Punta Umbría with Huelva, the province's capital, just 20 kilometres away.
A long and wide sandy beach attracts families and windsurfers. If you head west, you can walk for a couple of miles along the soft sands, reaching beaches like Playa de los Enebrales and La Bota, which are serenely peaceful and wonderful places to find yourself at sunset.
The blissfully beautiful beaches aren’t the only attraction. Punta Umbría is almost completely surrounded by the Odiel Marshes, a nature reserve that’s home to the likes of spoonbills, cormorants, and flamingos. Then, after days exploring the natural wonderland, return to the town to feast on Andalucian classic dishes, like gazpacho and salmorejo, or platefuls of local seafood.
