"The Hotel Avenida Palace is an absolutely beautiful property in the ideal location. I could not imagine a better setting or a more elegant building. The rooms were a very good size and extremely comfortable. We had a suite with two separate rooms. The furniture was classic and refined, the beds were comfortable, and the closet was large. Breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of items. Although it was a buffet, the selection was generous and included poached eggs and many other high quality options. I never needed to ask about any à la carte items because the buffet had everything we could want.
There are two areas where the hotel could improve. The first is the heating and air conditioning. Our room often felt very stuffy because the system did not seem to offer true climate control. It appeared to be either heat or off, with no real ability to adjust fan speed. As a result, the room became very warm and we had to open the windows for about thirty minutes before bed to make it comfortable for the night. For a five star hotel this is unusual. The second issue was ventilation in the bathroom. Even a short warm shower created steam that lingered because there was no exhaust fan.
The staff were attentive and professional and handled every request efficiently. However, I found the service style to be somewhat formal and a bit cold. Nothing was done incorrectly. It simply lacked the warmer, more personal touch that many travelers expect in a five star property. Some travelers told me this is common in Portugal, and in many places I did find that to be true. At the same time, I also met individuals, like my private guide, who were exceptionally warm and personable.
Despite these issues, I would absolutely return to this hotel. It would be my number one choice for Lisbon. I simply hope they consider improving the heating, air conditioning, and bathroom ventilation systems."
