Charming canalside hotel in Schiedam
Best known for windmills and gin, Schiedam sometimes sits in the shadow of its more popular next-door neighbour Rotterdam. But this is a city that’s brimming with history and charm – and is still within easy reach of Rotterdam thanks to an abundance of trains, trams, and buses.
Stadsvilla Mout is the perfect blend of modern and historic – interiors are light, airy, and chic, while the façade stays true to its 18th century roots. And did we mention it’s bagged a central spot right on a canal? That’s your morning strolls sorted – once you've tucked into the hotel's breakfast spread of course. As for zipping in and out of Rotterdam, there’s a tram stop about six minutes’ walk away which will have you in the centre of the city in about 20 minutes.
But you needn’t hop on the tram to find great ways to spend your time here. If you’re partial to a G&T, you’ve landed in the right place. Modern gin has traditional Dutch jenever to thank for its tantalising mix of juniper and botanicals – and Schiedam just so happens to be the jenever capital of the Netherlands. There’s a museum dedicated to the traditional spirit just two minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Schiedam’s other claim to fame is its penchant for towering windmills, and you’ll find the tallest one in the Netherlands just 10 minutes’ walk away. But you won’t even have to wander that far to find one, as Molen De Walvisch is just a three-minute stroll from the hotel, and is now home to a museum detailing the history of the mills in the city.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll be spoiled for choice in the city centre. Cosy bistros, haute cuisine restaurants, and laid-back pubs are all in plentiful supply – the hardest part will be choosing one.
