Kumbor Holidays

A sleepy corner of Kotor Bay

If you like your holidays more flip-flops and sea breezes than big-city buzz, Kumbor is the sleepy, sun-splashed side of the Bay of Kotor you’ve been looking for. The village unrolls along the waterfront with jetties, little pebble beaches and glassy, calm water that’s ideal for early swims and lazy afternoon dips. Fishing boats bob offshore, cats snooze in the shade of olive trees, and the loudest thing you’ll hear is cutlery from a nearby café. Wake up to the mountains across the bay glowing pink, watch the first boats glide past, then wander down to the shore before breakfast and decide just how slowly you’d like the day to go.

Stroll the seafront and you’ll find cafés, beach bars and small restaurants serving grilled fish, salads and carafes of local wine. You’ll be in a brilliant spot for boat trips: head out to the famous Blue Cave for a swim in neon water, circle the old fort island of Mamula, which is a filming location in the 2017 remake of Papillon, then glide past submarine tunnels from Yugoslav days before calling in at postcard-perfect Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks.

Days fall into a very happy pattern: swim, sunbathe, maybe hire a kayak or SUP, then nap, read and repeat. Break it up with a coffee in a harbour café, a cheeky afternoon beer, or a gelato walk along the front. Evenings are all about golden-hour strolls and simple dinners by the water as the bay lights flicker on, with the clink of glasses, low-key music and boats gliding past in the background. Stay out for a last drink under a sky full of stars, then wander back to your pad in a few sleepy minutes. If you want Montenegro’s fjord-style scenery with a gentler, village-y feel, Kumbor’s a quietly brilliant little place to drop your bags, slow your shoulders and properly exhale.
