"I stayed at the Leonardo Hotel in Belfast earlier this year and experienced a theft that occurred directly as a result of negligence and a failure to follow basic security procedures.
My iPad was stolen from the hotel’s luggage storage room. Management later confirmed that the individuals gained access through a staff-only access door, used for operational purposes such as taking bins out. This door was left open, which constitutes a clear act of negligence, as it allowed unauthorised access to a room containing guests’ personal belongings.
What makes this situation worse is that when my friend went to retrieve our luggage, the same door used by the thieves was still wide open and unattended, despite my items still being in the storage room.
Following the incident, the hotel confirmed that they would compensate me for my stolen items. I was asked to provide proof of purchase for the stolen iPad + charger which I did, showing I paid over £600. Despite this, I was later informed that the hotel would only reimburse the current estimated value of the device (around £200, which doesn’t even allow me to buy a entry level iPad). This means I am left significantly out of pocket for a loss caused entirely by the hotel’s negligence.
I requested head offices number to escalate the matter to them and since then my emails have been ignored by this hotel. This has given me no choice but to escalate this publicly.
For a large chain hotel, I expected higher security standards and a fair resolution once negligence had been acknowledged. While mistakes can happen, repeated lapses in security and an inadequate resolution after admitting fault are unacceptable.
I would strongly advise future guests not to leave valuables in the luggage storage area and hope Leonardo Hotels urgently reviews both its security procedures and how it handles incidents involving negligence."
