Landmar Playa La Arena

"It's a treat to find some sunshine in January and have a relaxing break after all the Christmas chaos - and this hotel ticked all my boxes. As a solo traveller I felt completely safe and comfortable, both in the hotel and the surrounding area. There are some wonderful coastal walks to enjoy, and it's not far to Los Gigantes where there are several options for whale watching trips. Buses run along the main road outside the hotel if you don't fancy the 40-50 minutes (mostly uphill) walk, and there are also plenty of taxis. Walking in the other direction takes you to the little town of Alcala (about an hour) and although the path disappears at one point into a complex of villas, it's worth searching out for the lovely route beside the sea where the waves (and the surfers!) are spectacular. The resort of Playa La Arena has a black sand beach which is well-maintained but the currents are strong so swimming is often prohibited. There are several bars and restaurants, some overlooking the sea, plus some shops and a couple of supermarkets. Los Gigantes has more retail opportunities and facilities, but generally this is a fairly quiet area which is some way from the bright lights further along the coast. The hotel offers a Platinum upgrade which I wanted to try having last visited 10 years ago when the new areas were being built. Platinum is for adults only (over 16) and probably the biggest benefit is the infinity pool and terrace with lovely views of the sea. The Platinum terrace also includes a small buffet restaurant and self-service bar open during the day. Another self-service bar/lounge in the hotel gives Platinum guests a large choice of branded drinks and has it's own coffee machine too. There are various other benefits to being a Platinum guest - I appreciated the cosy bathrobe and slippers in January when the mornings and nights are cooler. I also liked the option of the a la carte 'Muelle' restaurant for lunches, although the buffet was good too. Being alone and inclined to go off exploring, I probably didn't get the full benefit of the Platinum upgrade, but could imagine it would be perfect for anyone who likes to spend their holiday sunbathing in a peaceful spot with tasty food and drinks to hand. Food throughout the hotel ranged from really good to absolutely delicious and I enjoyed finding new dishes to try - cuttlefish were a revelation! I can honestly say I never had a bad meal and ate far too much - hence all the walking! I also appreciated the kind and helpful staff, especially the lovely waitress in the Platinum part of the restaurant who warmly welcomed me when I arrived for a late lunch after an early flight, greeted me like a long-lost friend whenever she was on duty, and hugged me after my last breakfast, when I was so sad to leave. The reception staff were great too, answering all my queries in perfect English, which made me ashamed of my lack of Spanish! The whole hotel is spotless and my room was cleaned every morning to a very high standard - I'd have liked to take the cleaner home with me! In conclusion, I found this a perfect hotel for a quiet, relaxing break in the sunshine, and am already looking at booking for next year - if not sooner!"

"This is my third time here and will definitely be coming again. The area and hotel is spectacular. The food is amazing with something for everyone. The rooms a large and the place is immaculately clean. Pool areas are great with loads of space and loungers. Special mention for the animation team especially Andrea who was a ray of sunshine round the pool. Would definitely recommend this to anyone."
