"To start with, this was our third time staying in this hotel during our annual January getaway from the miserable London weather, and it turned out to be the worst in terms of quality of the venue and guest service.
1. We haven't had hot water in our room for a total duration of two days within our 13 days stay. We've been told that there was a boiler failure. Now, we should mention that we experienced something similar (only for a shorter period of time) last year in January. After they managed to fix the boiler for a second time, we had dirty water running from the taps for a whole of 4 to 5 hours after that (water was unusable). We brought this to the attention of the staff and asked their manager to get in touch with us. Nothing happened after that - no one reached out back to us, no one apologized, no one offered something to mitigate our frustration.
2. Pool bar. We do appreciate that prices for drinks/food at the hotel bars are usually higher than those in the town bars, but do they have to be much higher than those in the hotels similar to Axel? Example (we had to compare): glass of fanta/sprite/coke at the Axel's pool bar is 4,5 Euro, whereas the same drink at Don Miguel or San Barbacan costs 2.6 Euro. Glass (not a pint!) of lager - 6 Euro.(you can get a pint in the town during a Happy hour for 2.5 Euro) Aperol Spritz - 12 Euro etc. I do understand Axel management is probably seeing its mainly gay clientele as the ones ready to spend money, but c'mon - give us a break!
3. Continental breakfast. Price - 25 Euro per person! Seriously? No wonder, we could rarely see more than 4-5 people enjoying breakfast in the morning. You could easily get a proper full English/Irish or continental for around 10 Euro in one of the towns' bars.
Resume: Given the overall quality of service, price policy (accommodation and food/drinks) provided for at Axel Beach Hotel, we've decided we could get a much better deal elsewhere when we are in Gran Canaria next time."
